Overview

Gasherbrum III, situated between Gasherbrum II and Gasherbrum IV, rises to a height of 7,952 meters (26,089 feet). It remained the highest unclimbed peak in the world until 1975. The first ascent was achieved on 11 August 1975 by a Polish women’s expedition led by Wanda Rutkiewicz.

The summit team comprised Wanda Rutkiewicz, Alison Chadwick, Janusz Onyszkiewicz, and Krzysztof Zdzitowiecki, who successfully reached the top. Although the expedition has often been described as an all-women climb, several men accompanied the team in support roles. Nevertheless, it was the women climbers who carried out the main climbing effort and ultimately stood on the summit.
